"abstract": "Extracted from original research, this article explores the motivation of students to undertake Higher Education as adult learners. Qualitative analysis of eight students’ interview texts highlights the necessity for tutors to be aware of students’ different needs and stages of development. This article identifies and addresses the unique nature of mature students and suggests some ways forward for educational providers and educators prompted by the complexities involved in teaching mature students.\n\nFindings of motivational factors may be grouped into nine headings: financial benefits; practising learned skills; future benefits; transformation; subject content; gaining certifications; imparting knowledge to others; networking with peers, and satisfying a curiosity. All have the underlying theme of the relationship with the pedagogist.\n\nConclusions drawn include the essential nature of offering encouragement to students to consider their perceptions of what motivates them to study and the benefit gained from students expressing themselves so that tutors can scaffold new learning.",
