"abstract": "Performance management of staff in higher education is essential for enhancing the learning experiences and outcomes of mature students. With the increasing number of adults returning to education, it is vital to understand their specific motivations and apply strategies that cater to their needs. Mature students often pursue higher education driven by external factors of career advancement, financial stability and personal development. These motivations require educational institutions to design programmes that are practically oriented and directly relevant to students' career goals. While external motivations are significant, internal factors including the enjoyment of learning and personal growth also play a role, albeit to a lesser extent. To address the needs of mature students successfully, performance management should focus on creating an educational environment that supports both career aspirations and personal development. This involves incorporating practical skills into the curriculum through methods including case studies, simulations and problem-solving activities, which enhance students' readiness for the workforce. Institutional policies should aim to reduce barriers to participation, offering flexible learning options and personalised support that recognises the diverse backgrounds of mature students. Nurturing an intellectually stimulating environment that acknowledges the importance of internal motivation is crucial. By balancing external and internal motivational factors, performance management can create a more complete educational experience that meets the immediate and long-term goals of mature students.",
